Be Consistent in Your Training!

Mike Boyle Strength and Conditioning

One of my favorite strength coaches, Mike Boyle, wrote an article a few years ago that I think all athletes should read. It is called Training is Like Farming.

To briefly summarize it, Mike explains that being consistent with your workouts over time is the key to achieving results. There is no quick fix. That just like farming, there are no immediate results! You must plant a seed, nurture it and care for it (exercise and nutrition), and only after time do you reap the rewards of your work.

Too often I get approached by athletes looking to make quick gains before their lacrosse season starts. They wait too long to begin training and then want to train hard for 3 weeks to get ready to play (and I’m referring to professional players here too!). You can’t cram to achieve physical results like a student studying for an exam. It takes time!

As well, I see many lacrosse players (especially teenagers) who are really motivated and excited to begin a training program and then when they don’t see noticeable results within the first 2 weeks start to miss workouts, skip entire weeks and then eventually stop training altogether. They don’t stay consistent enough in their training to get the results they want.

As Mike states in his article, “The key is to not quit. Have faith in the process!”

If you have a solid training program that you perform with proper effort, the results will come. It just takes time. When you feel like quitting push through it. One day you will notice the results and that will push you forward for the rest of your training program! When in doubt, remember Training is Like Farming!
